Making and restoring backups

The “Backups” card — under “Details” in the status line — shows your site’s restore points, newest first, each with date and reason: “backed up by you”, “nightly backup”, “before an update”, “before a serious step”, “before a push live from the sandbox”, “before a restore” or “before deleting”. It also says what the point contains: “all” or wp-content and database.

Points are created every night by themselves and before each of the steps named. “Back up now” creates one of your own, for example before an experiment. “Restore” resets your site to that version — everything newer is gone afterwards —, which is why you type the installation’s name in the “Restore this version” window. We back up your current version first, so you can go back again. Backing up and restoring use no AI credit.

The Café Lumen “Backups” card: Ana clicks “Back up now” and a point “backed up by you” appears at the top; then “Restore” on yesterday’s version, she types “Café Lumen” and confirms — the preview shows yesterday’s version.
  1. Click “Details” in the status line above the preview.
  2. In the “Backups” card, click “Back up now”.
  3. To go back, click “Restore” on a version, type the name and click “Restore” in the window.

The worry-free update

“Worry-free update” in the card with your site’s status brings WordPress, the database, all plugins and all themes up to date in one go. The steps are listed in order: “Check the site before the update”, “Back up the whole site”, “Refresh KENJTEC protection and maintenance page”, “Update WordPress”, “Update database”, “Update all plugins”, “Update all themes” and “Check the site after the update”. While WordPress is updating, visitors briefly see a maintenance page instead of an error.

If the site stops responding after the update although it did before, we restore the previous version by ourselves; it then says “After the update the home page returned an error. The previous version is back.” If it was not responding before either, that does not happen, and you read why. If a single plugin fails, the rest carries on. When all goes well, it ends with “Done — everything up to date.”

The worry-free update uses no AI credit. You update single plugins or only WordPress in the Control Panel.

The Café Lumen status card shows three plugin updates: a click on “Worry-free update” and “Back up and update” — the steps run one after another and it ends with “Done — everything up to date.”
  1. Click “Details” in the status line.
  2. Click “Worry-free update” and confirm with “Back up and update”.
  3. Wait until all steps have run and read the result.

Status and availability

The card with your site’s status shows, fresh from the server, the WordPress version — up to date or which version is available —, how many plugin and theme updates are pending, how many comments are waiting and how big the database is. Anything that could not be read shows as a question mark, never as a reassuring zero.

Below it is the second question: does your site respond at all? “Check now” under “Availability” calls your home page and your sign-in page once each; it changes nothing on your site and costs nothing. Afterwards it says “Checked: the home page and the sign-in respond.” with the response time — or that your site isn’t responding the way it should right now.

The nightly check

Under “We check every night” you switch the nightly check of your site on or off. Once a night we call your home page and your sign-in page. If your site does not answer, we look again shortly afterwards — only then does it count as down.

You only get a message to your account’s email address when something changes: when the site goes down and when it is back. Below it the latest checks are listed with “reachable” or “no response”. The nightly check uses no AI credit.

Speed and fast delivery

The “Speed” card measures how long a visitor waits for your home page. “Measure now” calls it several times and shows the “Response time for visitors” and the “First request” — the time before the page is in the cache. Measuring only happens when you click; when you open the card you see the last measurement.

Every installation delivers its pages from a cache, without you needing a plugin for it; “Fast delivery: active” shows that it works. Signed-in visitors, the cart, the sign-in page and feeds always get the fresh page. When you change content — in the workbench or in WP-Admin — the cache is cleared by itself and visitors see the new version.

The Café Lumen “Speed” card: a click on “Measure now”, after a few seconds the response time for visitors and the first request appear in milliseconds, below them “Fast delivery: active”.
  1. Click “Details” in the status line.
  2. In the “Speed” card, click “Measure now”.
  3. Read the response time for visitors and the first request.

The last seven days

The “The last 7 days” card sums up what happened on your site this week: updates, restores, checks, actions by Kenji, pushes from the sandbox, serious steps and backups, each with its count. A worry-free update counts as one run. The number of existing restore points comes straight from your server; if it does not answer, the reason is shown, not a zero.

The history and the way back

The “History” tab opens a timeline of the last 30 days in the middle: every action on your site and every restore point, with its time and a note of who it was — you, someone from KENJTEC or Kenji. Whether something “worked” or “didn’t work” is written out, not just shown as a colour. The filters “All”, “Changes”, “Backups” and “By Kenji” narrow the list; steps in the sandbox are marked.

A restore point carries “Back to this version”. After “Yes, go back — your current version is backed up first”, your site is at that version again, and the version from just before is kept as a new point. The history always refers to the live site.

The Café Lumen “History” tab: Ana filters by “Backups”, clicks “Back to this version” on yesterday’s point and confirms — a new entry appears at the top, and the preview shows yesterday’s version.
  1. Open the “History” tab.
  2. Choose the “Backups” filter.
  3. Click “Back to this version” on a point and confirm with “Yes, go back — your current version is backed up first”.
